Shigatse City Guide: Tashilhunpo Monastery

Shigatse is the cultivation center of Dalai Lama and located in southwest Tibet, and conjunction of Yarlung Tsangpo River and Nianchu River(年楚河, a main branch of Yarlung Tsangpo River) . It is under the influence of semiarid monsoon climate of plateau temperate zone. Shigatse in Tibetan language means the finca of fertile land, and it is an old city with more than 600 years of history. In December, 1986, approved by the State Council, it was upgraded as a city, and listed as a national famous city for history and culture. Shigatse is the one of the most important food production centers.

Shigatse is the second largest city of Tibet, and it has the abundant tourist resources, which represented by Mountain Everest (Mount Qomolangma), Tashilhunpo Monastery, Jyasa Monastery(萨迦寺), Glacier World, Yamdrok Lake, Baiju Monastery, Noijin Kangsang Peak, Qogir Peak, Shisha Pangma Peak, Labu Jikang Peak, Himalaya Mountain Ranges and Sangdankangsang Snow Mountain.

Shigatse peace airport with a construction investment of 532,000,000 RMB is one of 188 important superior infrastructural projects in Tibetan region. Shigatse peace airport is located in Jiangdang area, roughly 43 kilometers away from downtown Shigatse. Shigatse peace airport is the fifth civil airport of Tibet next to Lhasa Gonggar Airport, Chamdo Bangda Airport, Lyngchi Milin Airport and Ali Kunsha Airport. Over the past centuries, there were no railways and airlines in Shigatse, and which surely blocks the development of Shigatse.
