Welcome to Introduction on Tibet High Altitude Disease in Seeraa International, New and Updated Content as Below:

Speaking of Tibet, in many people’s mind, it is famous as The Roof of the World. Traditionally considered to be the sacred and purified highland, Tibet domestically is also known widely as the area of mystery and Buddhism. Chinese people, especially the local living in the low-altitude are mostly eager to take a special visit to this half-wild destination, however, majority of them do not dare to make their dream come true owing to the fear to the altitude stress and many unknown obstacles on the way to the spiritual paradise. Even some weak people never take Tibet travel into consideration. This is quite unreasonable! In fact, it is just a part of China, a relatively higher land in the world, and also many people today and over the past have been to there or settled down there. Moreover, many of today’s citizens belong to Han people immigrating from surrounding regions, especially Sichuan. In a word, the fear to Tibet equates the lack of self-confidence. Tibet is not the fear but the impressive tourist destination featuring the Buddhist tradition and unique lifestyle.

High Altitude Disease, also called Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is common at high altitudes, and depends on the elevation, the rate of ascent and individual susceptibility. According to the Tibetan local travel experts'experience, the westerners may have a totally different reaction from the easterners. Most visitors to Tibet will suffer from at least some symptoms that will generally disappear through acclimatization in several hours to several days. Specifically, the westerns just suffer a slight even no reaction to the non-acclimatization caused by high altitude. They take the westerner’s meat-oriented diet, which is quite similar to the local Tibetan people, as the most important reason; by contrast, the easterners represented by East China citizens, Japanese people, Korean people and Southeast Asian people usually suffer the strong reaction to the high altitude, due to the different diet custom.

Something related to the High Altitude Sickness, I needs to repeat what I have written above. As for the Acute High Altitude Disease (altitude stress), something special needs sharing with more friends, I heard some interesting comments or experience summary from a quite professional and experienced guide, who was roughly at the age of 50 and used to work for a large travel service in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, when we had a free talk in lobby of Yak Hotel, a symbolic and welcomed hotel in Lhasa. He told me that the westerners generally had no any reaction to the altitude which changed suddenly from below 1000 meters to above 3000 meters, and this was why many internationally famous mountaineers were mostly from Euro-American countries. On the contrary, the East Asian people suffered from the acute reaction to the high altitude disease. And He explained the reasons, firstly, the absolute difference from the difference of gene between the westerners and easterners, secondly, the different custom of eating and drinking models different physical characteristics, and the westerners mainly fed on the meat, which was similar to the diet of local people in Tibet. Maybe, the analysis of this old guy on the reasons of inducing the high-altitude disease is not so scientific, but it is mostly reliable based on a guide’s experience of many years. Personally, I believe what he said.

The symptoms of high altitude disease tend to be worse at night and include headache, dizziness, lethargy, loss of appetite, nausea, breathlessness and irritability. Difficulty in sleeping is another common symptom, and many travelers have trouble sleeping for the first few days after arriving in Lhasa.

The altitudes of cities and towns in Tibet generally are lower than surrounding areas, Lhasa has an average altitude of 3600 meters, Dingri has an average altitude of 4300 meters, but many famous and must-see tourist attractions have a higher altitude like the Mount Qomolangma Camp, which has more than 5500 meters above sea level on average. So it is quite necessary to take notice of the influence of high altitude disease.

How to Prevent High Altitude Disease in Tibet

How to prevent the high altitude disease includes two ways: sufficient acclimatization and drug prophylaxis. The effective suggestions as below:

1. It is better to arrive in Tibet by train rather than plane, starting your Tibet tour from the site with an altitude lower than 3048 meters.
2. If reaching Tibet by plane or bus, travelers had better not continue doing something more or climbing the sites above 3048 meters in 24 hours. Keeping relax when get to the higher altitude, and do not stress yourself. At daytime, doing some non-drastic activities is better than lying on the bed, because sleeping may weaken the respiratory function, which will worsen the symptom.
3. Drink extra fluids (water, juice or soft drink). The mountain air is dry and cold and moisture is lost as you breathe. Evaporation of sweat may occur unnoticed and result in dehydration.
4. Eat light, high-carbohydrate meals for more energy.
5. Avoid alcohol as it may increase the risk of dehydration, and don't smoke.
6. Avoid sedatives, sleeping pill, which may further weaken the respiratory function and worsen the symptom.
7. Don't push yourself when climbing up to passes, rather take plenty of breaks.
8. Avoid catching cold before you entering Tibet.
9. For all of the tourists, the authorized doctor from Tibet Travel Expert will come to guest's room to give a regular check. For the people who are affected severely with headache and sleepless, they could get injection in the room or take some Tibetan medicine as per doctor's advices. Many of our clients have been treated and approved for its efficiency.
10. The traveler who has the strong acclimatization can get rid of the high altitude disease.
in one or two days, and weak travelers needs three or seven days. Drinking more ghee tea is useful to relieve the high altitude disease.
