Tianjin University, the counterpart of Nankai University in Tianjin, is the first university in China with the name of “Peiyang University” founded in 1895 and also one of the key universities directly under the Ministry of Education of China. Tianjin University was the first to fully adopt western university system in China. Upon its beginning, it ran according to American model, where western learning was mainly taught. Moreover, as to the school system, it was stipulated, as soon as the university was established, that the undergraduate program is the first class and prior the second and that either of them last four years.

Over one hundred years of history, the university has formed a distinct style, which takes engineering as core, combining with science and other disciplines of management, economy, literature, philosophy, art, education, pharmaceutics and Chinese language Teaching and so on, thus developing an integrative layout, and more than 150,000 students have graduated from Tianjin University and made great contributions in every way of life. A complex educational system consisting of bachelor, master and doctoral programs has been established in the university, which is well-known for its academic spirit of "Rigorous Scholarship, rigid discipline" at home and abroad. Taking the goal as cultivating innovative talent, Tianjin University has 54 bachelor programs, 151 Master programs and 92 Doctoral programs, MBA, EMBA, MPA and Engineering Master Program. There are 1280 professors and associate professors, among whom there are 8 academicians of Chinese Academy of Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 509 PhD’s supervisors and more than 710 Master's supervisors. Now there are more than 27000 students, among who over 9200 are postgraduates.

Since 1949, Tianjin University has cultivated a large number of leading and senior cadres, hundreds of the head of large state-owned enterprises and chief engineers. Partly estimated, in its school alumni there are 64 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, more than 50 presidents of university. Especially, many Tianjin University alumni contribute a lot to 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in venue construction: Mr.Cui Kai (the chief director for Olympic project from Architectural Design and Research Institute of China), Mr.Li Xinggang (chief designer of the National Stadium - "Bird's Nest"), Mr.Zhao Xiaojun (chief designer of China of National Swimming Center (the "Water Cube"), and other 10 more leading figures are also graduated from our university. Furthermore, For over a century, Tianjin University had a large number of excellent graduates, who were the first generation brought up with both the Chinese and western cultures, and among whom were the founders of various fields in modern China, such as some in the first group of students officially sent to study overseas, the first aviation graduates, diplomats, well-known businessmen in transportation, mining and metallurgy, bankers, scientists, educators and social activists, too many to mention all of them. The alumni started many “first's”, such as Wang Chonghui, the first Chinese judge to the International Court, Jin Wensi, the first person to start negotiation with GATT (WTO), Liu Ruiheng, the founder of the Chinese public health system, Ma Yinchu, the first Ph.D in economics, and Wang Zhengting, the first Chinese member in the International Olympic Committee. The alumni did great contributions in all walks of life and helped move China to a modernized society from an old feudal one.

Tianjin University began to enroll international students from 1954, and it is one of the earliest universities to accept international students in China. Up to now it has accepted more than 1,500 international students of different levels from over 110 countries and regions in Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania. Tianjin University has established long cooperative relationship with more than 120 colleges and institutions in Korea, Japan, USA, UK, France, Germany, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, Indonesia and other 30 countries. International students can be accepted to study in any of the programs in the university,including bachelor, master, doctor program and short-term or long-term Chinese language courses. A great number of international students who graduated from this university have gained high praise for their knowledge and ability in their occupations. Tianjin University School of International Education is also one of the earliest “Base of Chinese Language Education” designated by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. Currently the International Education in Tianjin University has formed a multi-species and multi-levels pattern.
