Peking University is a comprehensive and national key university. The campus, known as "Yan Yuan"（the garden of Yan）, is situated at Haidian District in the western suburb of Beijing, with a total area of 2,743,532 square metres (or 274 hectares). The History and Honor of Peking University
Peking University was founded in 1898, and in 1912, it was formally titled Peking University. It was the first national university covering comprehensive disciplines in China, and has been a leading institution of higher education in China since its establishment. It also served as the highest administration for education at the beginning of its founding. In 1917, Mr. Cai Yuanpei was appointed to be the president of Peking University, and then a series of reforms were done to promote its modernization from tradition. During the anti-Japanese war period, Peking University was moved to southwest area of China. In Kunming of Yunnan province, a new but temporary university comprised of Peking University, Qinghua University and Nankai University named Southwest United University was founded. In 1946, this temporary university disbanded, and Peking University moved back to Beijing. During the time before 1949, many famous persons became the backbones from Peking University such as Hu Shi, Chen Duxiu, Cai Yuanpei, Yu Pingbo, Feng Younan and so on. In 1951, Ma Yingchu was assigned to be the first president of Peking University after the foundation of People’s Republic of China. By the way, the department of Chinese Literature is the most authoritative one in Peking University and the school library in the largest one in Asia. At the end of the 20th century, the Chinese government put Peking University at the top of its agenda for promoting higher education, with the aim to build a world-class university in the 21st Century. After merging with Beijing Medical University in 2000, Peking University once again was strengthened in its disciplinary structure.
