East China Normal University (ECNU) also known as Huadong Normal University was founded in October 1951 on the site of Great China University in Shanghai. East China Normal University (ECNU) is one of the universities under the direct auspices of the Ministry of Education. As a comprehensive university especially featuring teacher education, it has been assessed eligible for the "211 project", a national project of higher-educational development. In 1972, ECNU was renamed Shanghai Normal University, when other four institutes including Shanghai Teachers Institute, Shanghai Education Institute, Shanghai Physical Education Institute, and Shanghai in-Service Teachers Institute were merged with it. In July 1980, it regained its original name of ECNU as the other four institutes separated again and resumed their original status one after another in 1978.
Over fifty years of development, ECNU has become one of the key institutions of higher learning under the direct auspices of the Ministry of Education, influential both at home and abroad. The University has 18 full-time schools, namely School of Humanities, School of Educational Science, School of Educational Administration, School of Preschool Education and Special Education, School of Foreign Languages, School of Business , School of Law and Politics, School of Communication, School of Art, School of Design, School of Life Science, School of Physical Education and Health Care, School of Science and Engineering, School of Natural Resources and Environmental Science, School of Information Science and Technology, School of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, School of software engineering and the Vocational College.
These schools consist of 39 departments offering 61 undergraduate programs, 5 of which, i.e. Chinese, History, Mathematics, Geography and Psychology, are on the list of State Training and Research Bases for Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences. Besides, the University has 6 state key programs, 1 state key laboratory, 5 key laboratories under the Ministry of Education and 6 key research bases for humanities and social sciences approved by the Ministry of Education, and over 100 research institutes and a number of multi-disciplinary research, experiment, computing and testing centers. The Graduate School offers 94 doctoral programs, 139 Master's programs (including Master's Degree of Education and MPA), and has 10 mobile post-doctoral research stations. In addition, the University has Web School of Education, College of Continuing Education and International College of Chinese Culture. Among the total staff of over 4,500, there are nearly 1,600 full-time teachers, including 9 national academicians and nearly 1,100 professors and associate professors, many of whom enjoy high reputation in their respective academic circles.
The university has always attached great importance to the integration of the special characteristics of a normal university and academic excellence with equal emphasis on teaching and scientific research, and has, thus, developed into a university not only strong in educational science but also strong in the fields of social science, humanities, natural sciences, science and technology and management science. While mainly training students to be teachers in high schools, colleges and universities, the University also nurtures scientific researchers and other academic and administrative professionals.
With advanced teaching facilities as well as a strong teaching and research force, CNU has 13 academic schools and colleges. These are
the Schools of: Humanities, Educational Science, Preschool Education
& Special Education, Foreign Languages, Business, Law & Politics.
Sports & Health, Sciences & Engineering, Natural Resources &
Environmental Science, Life Science, Information Science & Technology,
and Colleges of Software Technology and Vocational Education. These
schools and colleges consist of 33 departments offering 53 undergraduate
programs, 5 of which (i.e. Chinese language & literature, history,
mathematics, geography and psychology) are on the list of State training
and Research Bases for the Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences.
In addition to its strength in the areas of humanities, social sciences
and natural sciences, the University has been making great efforts to
develop a series of new disciplines based on recent hi-tech developments
and on the current needs of the society (e.g. information science and
technology, new materials, life science and technology, ecology, economics,
sociology, administration, etc.). At present ECNU has 6 national priority
disciplines, 1 state key laboratory, 3 key laboratories under the Ministry
of Education, 1 municipal key laboratory and 5 research bases for the
humanities and social sciences approved by the Ministry of Education.
Its Graduate School offers 61 doctoral programs, 101 master's programs.
It also has 8 mobile stations for post-doctoral research. Its teaching
faculties include 6 academicians from China Academy of Science and China
Academy of Engineering and over 1,100 full and associate professors.
Besides 12,000 full-time undergraduate and 4,000 graduate students,
every year nearly 1,000 international students from all over theworld
are attracted to ECNU by its superior strength in many disciplines as
well as in teaching Chinese language and Chinese culture.
Since its founding, the University has already educated over 100,000 students who have been well received by their employers. Meanwhile, in its effort to give full display to its academic superiority, the University has undertaken a great number of key scientific research projects, consultant projects and training projects from the central government and the local authorities, as well as those from business companies and other institutions.
ECNU is well known as a "Garden University" for its beautiful campus with beautiful streams, luxuriant trees, green lawns and lovely flower. Scattered about the campus are buildings in traditional and western architectural styles.
Besides, the University has been actively involved in providing service for the elementary and secondary education, economic construction and social progress of both the city of Shanghai and other parts of China, which has eventuated in remarkable scientific achievements with very good social effect and economic results. The Training Center of High School Principals at ECNU is the only national base for training provincial key high school principals and other senior administrators of educational administration. In addition, the University has established relations with nearly 100 foreign institutions of higher learning for academic exchanges.ECNU has established
inter-university cooperative relations with over 80 universities and
educational institutes in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia,
including many top level institutions in the world such as Ecole Normale
Superieur in France, University of VSA, Kobe University in Japan, and
so on. More than 100 foreign experts were invited to be honorary professors
and advisory professors of ECNU.
