Huangshan Mountain(黄山), or translated as Yellow Mountain and abbreviated as Mount Huang, located in Huangshan city or Huizhou region in south part of Anhui province, and the city is named after this world-famous mountain. Traditionally, Huangshan was ranked one of Three Holy Mountains and Five High Mountains(三山五岳), and honored as the No. One Remarkable Mountain on Earth. Huangshan Mountain is an important sacred center of Taoism, and a lot of related cultural sites are well preserved. Emperor Huang(黄帝), a legendary forefather of Han people, was said to be an immortal god by way of alchemy. Xu Xiake(徐霞客, 1587—1641) visited Huangshan mountain twice, and left a classic comment on it: visitors do not want to visit mountains after traveling to Five High Mountains, and they also do not want to visit high mountains after traveling to Huangshan Mountain(五岳归来不看山，黄山归来不看岳). In history, lots of great poets left their great poems on this great mountain. Over the past dozens of years, Huangshan Mountain has been firmly ranked the first place of China’s ten top famous mountains. Huangshan Mountain is also a well-known summer resort, and the national place of interest as well as recuperation center. In 1990, it was written into the List of UNSECO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites, and also the second site inscribed as cultural and natural heritage. The whole ecological system of mountain is protected well.
Originally named Yishan Mountain(黟山, Yi means Black), Huangshan in ancient times is also called Gangshan Mountain(岗山). In 747, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty renamed it Huangshan Mountain in accordance with the story that Emperor Huang rise up to paradise as a god. Huangshan Mountain is a representative embodiment of Huizhou culture, which is well known as one of Top Three Regional Cultures of China, which are comprised of Huizhouology, Dunhuangology and Tibetology. It covers various aspects like philosophy, economics, history, medicine, science and art.
Huangshan Mountain surely is quite famous in history, and a great number of scholars left their poems and prose after visiting this great mountain. As a famous Taoist mountain, there are a lot of peaks or sites themed with Taoist culture like Zhusha Peak, Liandan Peak, Tiandu Peak, Xuanyuan Peak, Xianren Peak, Danjing Well, Trying-Sword Rock, Putuan Pine Tree, Rock of Xianren Shaixue, Rock of Xiannv Xiuhua, Wangxian Tai, Liandan Tai, Liandan Yuan and Shenxian Cave. Also, the famous Ciguang Pavilion at the foot of Zhusha Peak and Songgu Nunnery at the foot of Diezhuang Peak are both the famous Taoist temples. Besides, there are also other famous Taoist or Buddhist architecture like Cuiwei Temple, Songgu Nunnery, Yungu Temple and Yupinglou.
