Huangshan Mountain(黄山), or translated as Yellow Mountain and abbreviated as Mount Huang, located in Huangshan city or Huizhou region in south part of Anhui province, and the city is named after this world-famous mountain. Traditionally, Huangshan was ranked one of Three Holy Mountains and Five High Mountains(三山五岳), and honored as the No. One Remarkable Mountain on Earth. Huangshan Mountain is an important sacred center of Taoism, and a lot of related cultural sites are well preserved. Emperor Huang(黄帝), a legendary forefather of Han people, was said to be an immortal god by way of alchemy. Xu Xiake(徐霞客, 1587—1641) visited Huangshan mountain twice, and left a classic comment on it: visitors do not want to visit mountains after traveling to Five High Mountains, and they also do not want to visit high mountains after traveling to Huangshan Mountain(五岳归来不看山,黄山归来不看岳). In history, lots of great poets left their great poems on this great mountain. Over the past dozens of years, Huangshan Mountain has been firmly ranked the first place of China’s ten top famous mountains. Huangshan Mountain is also a well-known summer resort, and the national place of interest as well as recuperation center. In 1990, it was written into the List of UNSECO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites, and also the second site inscribed as cultural and natural heritage. The whole ecological system of mountain is protected well.

Originally named Yishan Mountain(黟山, Yi means Black), Huangshan in ancient times is also called Gangshan Mountain(岗山). In 747, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty renamed it Huangshan Mountain in accordance with the story that Emperor Huang rise up to paradise as a god. Huangshan Mountain is a representative embodiment of Huizhou culture, which is well known as one of Top Three Regional Cultures of China, which are comprised of Huizhouology, Dunhuangology and Tibetology. It covers various aspects like philosophy, economics, history, medicine, science and art.

In ancient times, Huizhou strongly features of non-remote area in deep mountains, and less farmland but more scholar-bureaucrats and businessmen. During the warfare, this was a sheltered area, and a lot of talents settled here or led a reclusive life here. It is a Xanadu of the warring period and the treasure of the intellectual in peaceful times, so in history, there were variety of talented people going from this area. For instance, Bi Sheng(毕昇), the initiator of moveable typography, Zhu Xi(朱熹), the Confucian saint of South Song Dynasty and the founder of neo-Confucianism, Xu Guo(许国), a top official of Ming and Qing Dynasties, Bao Shufang(鲍漱芳),the powerful salt merchant, Jiang Chun(江春), a great merchant and the friend of Emperor Qianlong, Wang Daokun(汪道昆), a famous dramatist, Wang Ang(汪昂), a famous medicine master, Li Ting(李廷), a great master of creating Huizhou Ink and She Ink-stone, Jian Jiang(渐江), the founder of Xinan School of Painting Theory, Dai Zhen(戴震), a famous philosopher, Wang Maoyin(王茂荫), a famous financier who was the only Chinese mentioned in Karl Marx’s Capital, Tao Xingzhi(陶行知), a great modern educationist, Hu Shi(胡适), a great academic master boasting father of Chinese renaissance, Zhan Tianyou(詹天佑) was the first railway engineer of China, Xu Qian(徐谦), a famous jurisconsult and the secretary general of Sun Yat-sen’s Marshal Mansion.

In the meantime, Huizhou Culture is a huge system also including philosophy of Xinan, Medicine of Xinan, Painting School of Xinan, Miniascape of Huizhou, She Ink-stone, Huizhou Ink, Architectural Style of Huizhou, Carving of Huizhou, Opera of Huizhou and Cuisine of Huizhou. Up to today, there are many ancient bridges, ancient pagodas, ancient pavilions, ancient memorials, ancient paifang and ancient temples. Huizhou actually is a big fenceless museum of regional history.



Architecture and Tradition in Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area

Huangshan Mountain surely is quite famous in history, and a great number of scholars left their poems and prose after visiting this great mountain. As a famous Taoist mountain, there are a lot of peaks or sites themed with Taoist culture like Zhusha Peak, Liandan Peak, Tiandu Peak, Xuanyuan Peak, Xianren Peak, Danjing Well, Trying-Sword Rock, Putuan Pine Tree, Rock of Xianren Shaixue, Rock of Xiannv Xiuhua, Wangxian Tai, Liandan Tai, Liandan Yuan and Shenxian Cave. Also, the famous Ciguang Pavilion at the foot of Zhusha Peak and Songgu Nunnery at the foot of Diezhuang Peak are both the famous Taoist temples. Besides, there are also other famous Taoist or Buddhist architecture like Cuiwei Temple, Songgu Nunnery, Yungu Temple and Yupinglou.  

The local tradition of Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area is also quite attractive. Zhangguwu(仗鼓舞), also called Victory Drum, a special ceremonial drum dancing is said to celebrate the victory of Generals Zhang Xun and Xu Yuan of Late Tang Dynasty to defeat rebel forces of An Lushan(安禄山). Such a dancing is made up of ten dancers, and the performers dress up to be warriors, and the whole show is quite fascinating.

Dieluohan Show(叠罗汉, Human Pyramid), a folk game popularized in Ye Village of She County, and the performers are all the men. The entire performance is masculine. They expose their arms and shoulders, and paint their faces with different decorations. The performers do not say and sing but express the theme with their acts, and they chime in with the drum strikes. The whole show goes from the easy show to the difficult performance.

Tiao Zhongkui(跳钟馗) also called Xi Zhongkui, is a folk dancing popular with people living in Yansi Town of Huizhou District and Zhujia Village of She County. This show was said to originate from Ming Dynasty. Annually, during Dragon-Boat Festival, this show is available to bless for a good luck and safety. Anciently, people shouldered a puppet of Zhong Kui, who was the catching-ghost god and quite famous in folk China, to play, and then, this show developed to a real show that Zhongkui is played by man.

Taige(抬阁, Shouldering the pavilion), is a popular show in Xiuning county, also called Tai Jiao. The pavilions are comprised three stories. Some good-looking children play the related story figures and show in different storey, and the whole pavilion will be shouldered by four or eight strappers. The surrounding of the pavilion is decorated with colorful color-made lanterns with different shapes of dragon, phoenix, cranes, and auspicious cloud and water flowers.

Mulian Opera(目莲戏) is an ancient opera in Huizhou, especially famous in the region of Qimen and Shitai Counties. This opera is themed with a Buddhist story that Fu Luobu(傅罗卜), a son of Fu Xiang(傅相) , adventured the hell to save his mother Liu Qingti(刘青提) ,who profaned the god. This opera generally is played during the period of intercalary month in the lunar calendar so as to drive out evil spirits.



The Classic Tourist Attractions of Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area

The Strange Pine Trees: Huangshan Mountain extends for hundreds of miles and full of diversity of pine trees. Huangshan pine trees generally stand on the high peak with an altitude over 800 meters. They root in rocks. It is a special kind of pine trees due to the special landform and climate of Huangshan Mountain. They specifically grow on the north part of Huangshan, at the altitude of 1500 -1700 meters, or south part of Huangshan Mountain at the altitude of 1000-1600 meters. The most famous pine trees on Huangshan Mountain are Yingke Pine Tree, Wangke Pine Tree, Songke Pine Tree, Tuanpu Pine Tree, Heihu Pine Tree, Wolong Pine Tree, Qiling Pine Tree and Lianli Pine tree. They are famous as Ten Top Pine Trees of Huangshan Mountain.

The Unique Rocks: there are roughly more than 120 strange rocks. They are unique and impressive. Some like human or objects, some like birds or animals. They are quite similar to the real things both in the shape and the expression. In the mist, seen from afar, they are really life-like. Many of them become the famous scenic spots of Huangshan Mountain like Houzi Guanhai(猴子观海, Monkeys Viewing the Sea), Xianren Zhilu(仙人指路, The God Guiding the Way), Laoseng Caiyao(老僧采药, The Old Monks Picking Herbs), Suwu Muyang(苏武牧羊, Su Wu Herding Sheep, and Su Wu was a great patriot highly praised by Confucians thanks to its great show as a slave of Huns). According to the list, there are more than 1200 rocks showing diversity of images.

The Sea of Cloud: Huangshan is a traditional place to see the grand view of the cloud sea. All the year, the cloud of Huangshan Mountain shows its elegance and special to the visitors. As the directions, Huangshan Mountain Cloud Sea consists of East Sea, South Sea, West Sea, North Sea and Heavenly Sea, and the best place to see them include Lianhua Peak, Tiandu Peak, Guangming Peal and Baie Peak, Aoyu Peak as well as Qingliang Tai.

The Thermal Spring: the hot spring of Huangshan Mountain is located at the foot of Ziyun Peak. It is said that Emperor Huang bathed here for 49 days, and then became a god. The hot spring is a perfect place for healthcare. It has many rare mine materials, which are quite effective to relieve or cure the diseases like digestion, nerve and cardiovascular.

The Great Waterfalls: there are three most famous waterfalls in Huangshan Mountain: Renzi Waterfall, Baizhang Waterfall and Jiulong Waterfall. Renzi Waterfall seems like a human between Zishi Peak and Zhusha Peak, and the best site to view the waterfall is Guanpu Tower. Jiulong Warterfall is originated from Tiandu Peak, Yuping Peak, Liandan Peak and Xianzhang Peak. It falls between Luohan Peak and Xianlu Peak, and the whole process is comprised of nine parts, and each part is a pool, totally nine pools. It is the most magnificent waterfall of Huangshan Mountain. Baizhang Waterfall comes out from the site between Qingtan Peak and Ziyun Peak.

Six Main Sections of Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area

Thermal Spring Scenic Zone: anciently called Xanadu, generally the travelers visiting to Huangshan Mountain usually park here, and currently is a reception center of Hangshan Mountain. The whole scenic zone centering on Lansheng Bridge extends to the surrounding area. The famous Peach Blossom Stream and Xiaoyao Stream go across this area; the main hotels include Taoyuan Hotel, Thermal Spring Hotel and Huangshan Hotel. Generally, visitors enter Scenic Zone via this access, which local people call it Ciguang Pavilion Front Access. It is roughly 7 kilometers away from the rear access, locally called Yungu Temple Access. The highlights attraction is Ciguang Pavilion, originally called Ciguang Temple or Zhusha Nunnery. It was established in Ming Dynasty, and imperially famous as Huguo Ciguang Si(护国慈光寺, Nation-Protection Ciguang Temple ).

Yuping Scenic Zone: centering on Yuping Tower, and highlighted with Lianhua Peak and Tiandu Peak. The scenic spots include Three Islands of Penglai Fairyland, One-Hundred-Step Scaling Ladder, A Gleam of Sky and Aoyu Cave. Yuping Tower is located between Tiandu Peak and Lianhua Peak, and it is great show of Huangshan Mountain Splendid Views. Tiandu Peak is located on the south of Yuping Peak, is the steepest peak among three main peaks of Huangshan Mountain. Lianhua Peak is on the north of Yuping Tower, famous as the highest Peak with an altitude of 1864 meters. Aoyu Peak is 1780 meters high and looks like a big whale.

North Sea Scenic Zone: it is the hinterland of Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area, rougly located among Guangming Peak, Shixing Peak, Shizi Peak and Baie Peak. It is the quintessential exhibition center of Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area. North Sea is the main scenic spot and the tourist reception center. Centering on The North Sea Hotel or Beihai Hotel, it is also the intersection center of different accesses to Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area

Baiyun Scenic Zone: located in the west part of Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area. The whole scenic zone centers on Diaoqiao Nunnery(钓桥庵) . It connects with Xugu Bridge on the south, Funiu Peal on the north, Yunji and Shiren Peaks on the east and Shuangkou side on the west. For integrating Baiyun Scenic Zone, Songgu Scenic Zone and North Sea Scenic Zone, the administrative authority opens a new zone called West Sea Grand Canyon

Songgu Scenic Zone: is the north access of Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area. It is located on the north side of Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area, is the valley area surrounded by Shizi Peak, Luotuo Peak, Shuxiang Peak and Baota Peak. Generally, visitors enter Huangshan via Furongling. This scenic zone is a complex of natural and cultural landscape. The cultural sites include Furong Mansion, Songgu Buddhist Building Cluster and Songgu Cliff Inscriptions.

Yungu Scenic Zone: is located on the east side of Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area. It is a low-altitude area. In Song Dynasty, Premier Cheng Yuanfeng(程元凤) used to study here, so it is also called Cheng Xiang Yuan(丞相源), and In Ming Dynasty, Fu Yan(傅严), a scholar-bueuracaut inscribe Yun Gu(云谷) due to the request of a local monk. And the local temple changed to be Yungu Temple. Today, it is a name of place, and the main scenic area includes Yungu Villa, Ancient Trees, Unique Stones, Jiulong Waterfall and Baizhang Spring. It is also the most important access to the Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area.

Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area Travel Tips

The best site to view the highlighted aspects of Huangshan Moutnain Scenic Area:
1. Where to view the best sunrise: Qingliangtai, Shuguangting, Shizifeng, Shixinfeng, Danxiafeng, Guangmingding, Aoyufeng and Yupinglou.
2. Where to view the best sunglow: Paiyunting, Danxiafeng, Feilaishi, Guangmingding and Shizifeng
3. Where to view the magnificent cloud sea: view the front cloud sea on Yupinglou, view the rear cloud sea of Qingliangtai, view the east cloud sea of Baieling, view the west cloud sea of Paiyunting and view the heavenly cloud sea of Guangmingding.
4. Where to view the best snow scenery: Beihai, Xihai, Tianhai, Yupinglou, Songgu, Yungu and Wenquan.

The Cableways of Huangshan Mountain Scenic Area: the service time is 6:30-17:00 except wintertime. In winter, the time is 8:00-16:00. Generally, the main cableways of Huangshan Mountains include Yuping Cableway as the front side and Yungu Cableway as the rear side. Yungu Cableway is also the most advanced cableway service system in the world.
