The Origin of Its Name
There are diverse legends on the origin of Yellow Dragon Cave. One is said to be in memory of a young yellow dragon that died from leading the residences of Hangzhou to defeat the evil old yellow dragon, and the local people shaped a statue of yellow dragon head at the site of his death, so this site was named Yellow Dragon Cave, and the rainfall was considered to be the tears flowing out of the body of the young yellow dragon. The other is like this: a monk from the Yellow Dragon Mountain of Jiangxi province established a temple over here roughly in the reign of Emperor Chunyou in Song Dynasty, and one day, a yellow dragon flied here, and stopped on a rock, and opened its mouth, and the clear springwater spewed out, therefore, this site was named officially The Yellow Dragon Cave.

黄泽不竭 – Yellow (Dao derived from Emperor Yellow) Pond Never Get Dried
老子其犹 – Lao Zi Looks Like …(subjective omission in hidden meaning)
Literally, it is hard to be understood in meaning, but actually it is polished in a rhetorical way of omission. This couplet specifically expresses the basic but deep meaning of Taoism. Basically, the Dao originated from Emperor Yellow like the water of deep pond is never dried out (this is the basic meaning of the former part of the couplet); Lao Zi, the founder of Taoism, is a great soul like a dragon, and get the core of Dao, and is eventually eternalized in life. Hiding Character or Omitting Character is a traditional rhetorical way in literature, and this couplet is the most classic instance of this. The latter could be explained overall as Lao Zi Qi You Long Ye(老子其犹龙耶?, translated to be Lao Zi really looks like a dragon, a high comment of Confucius on Lao Zi). There is an old saying goes like this: Shen Long Jian Shou Bu Jian Wei(神龙见首不见尾, the sacred dragon never shows its tail any longer once comes out with its head)

The both of the way are the ancient trees and bamboos, and the whole design is great and traditionally beautiful. The center of the Yellow Dragon Cave is a pond surrounded by the rockery and pavilions, and a great yellow dragon head statue is available and quite attractive. And the spring flows out of the mouth of the dragon. At the connection of the spring to the pond, there is a standing in water, and two sides are the famous sentences carved on rock, which is themed with:”水不在深,有龙则灵” (The water is nothing to do with its depth but will be of nimbus if there is a dragon), which is from a famous prose named Lou Shi Ming(陋室铭, Ode to the Humble Abode), and this was the representative literary masterpiece of Liu Yuxi(刘禹锡), a great poet of late Tang Dynasty.
