China(中国, Zhong Guo, literally meaning is the country located in the center) , situated in East Asia, currently consists of Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. China traditionally is famous for its ceramics or porcelains, and kept the international business with many western countries. During the period of the west under the reign of Rome, Roman called China. Some other Chinese history experts the reason why the west calls China China is based on Chinese first unified Dynasty-Qin or Chin, and as the time elapses, it gradually was changed to be China in line with the speaking facilitation of westerners. Today China mainly means Mainland China when mentioned since the foundation of People’s Republic of China in 1949.
The total territory of China is no less than 9,600,000 square kilometers. It is the third country in the world with the largest territory. Most of land in China belongs to mountains or hills, and then plains, highlands and deserts. Actually, the arable land only covers a tiny section of whole territory. So China since ancient time is always faced with the food crisis when food is in short supply, especially during the period of Chinese population boom in the mid-20th century.
Today, its total population is over 1.3 billion, which covers one quarter or even more of world total population. Anyway, China is one of countries with the highest population density. With respect to population composition, Chinese population is generally comprised of farmers, workers (including newly-appeared peasant workers), students, intellects, officials, soldiers and teachers and so on. In the aspect of nationalities, China is also constituted of 56 nationalities, in other words, there are 55 minority nationalities except Han nationality.
