Geermu city is located in the south part of Haixi Mongolian-Tibet Nationality Autonomous Region and westwardly gets close to Xinjiang Autonomous Region and southwardly is near to Tibetan Autonomous Region. Geermu in Mongolian means the place with dense rivers. It is in the hinterland of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and has 710 kilometers away from Xining. Geermu city is a new-rising industrial city.

Geermu city is under the influence of continental plateau climate. The climatic feature is: shortage of rain, abundance in wind, dryness, longer time and coldness in winter as well as shortness and coolness in summer. The annual rainfall averagely is only 41.5 mm. However, the evaporation is quite strong. The sunshine time is long in a day. The annual sunshine time is up to 3,358 hours.

In its administrative zone, it abounds in the salt resources. The typical saline lakes are Chaerhan Saline Lake and East &West Taijinaier Mining Area. It is also the largest mining area of magnesium, lithium and salt in China. Based on the rich resources of saline lakes, petroleum and natural gas, Geermu city emphasizes the industries of salt and petroleum.

In its Tanggula Mountain area, there is a natural reserve for protecting the wild animals of Qinghai province. The local special animals are wild yaks, white-lip deer, wild donkey, snow leopard, snow chicken, black-neck crane and snow lotus. Geermu city is located at the conjunctional area of Tibet-Qinghai Highway, Qinghai-Xinjiang Highway, Dunhuang-Geermu Highway and Qinghai-Tibet Railway. It is the transportation hub of west Qinghai province. Visiting from Geermu, visitor can arrive in Tibet in the south and Gansu province in north and Xinjiang in west. The flights to Xining, Lanzhou, Xian and Lhasa are all available. Geermu is the important transportation transfer station and the collective area from Tibet to Hinterland of China.
