Qinghai Lake, literally Blue Sea Lake, is Chinese largest salt-water lake. It is situated in the northeast part of Qinghai City and in Mongolian language it is called Kuku Nuoer, which means blue lake. It is formed from the faultage downthrows among Datong Mountain, Riyue Mountain and Nanshan Mountain. Qinghai Lake takes possession of 4300 square kilometers of vast waters. Everyday, a large flock of birds fly around waters in succession. It is the natural paradise among sky, cloud and waters.

Qinghai Lake is surrounded by the vast plain. The lakeside area is vast flat and sufficient water. Besides, the climate of Qinghai Lake is relatively mild and benign, and it is the rich and lush natural pasture. In different seasons, Qinghai Lake shows travelers its best side. Ornithologists, campers, hikers, botanists, swimmers, sailors, fishermen, loners and nomads all find areas of interest around the lake. The beauty here lies in its salty vastness and the remote peace that it instills. The colors that can be found around the lake are of purity and contrasts, from the deep yellows of oil seed rape against the cold blues of the lake to the dark greens of distant mountains against the fluffy white of bilious clouds. Hence, many travelers who has been to Qinghai Lake always comment it as a life-like oil painting with changeable colors in line with the change of seasons all the year

There are 5 small islands in Qinghai Lake, and the most famous one is Bird Island, a peninsular in the westernmost part of the lake and the most impressive sight, especially in season. In summer, a multitude of birds of rare species can be seen on this island. It is the special bird breeding center of Asia and the top of China’s eight bird reserves. By the way, the local cuisine is also unique and generally consists of fish-themed dishes. And the notable is the naked carp, which is the representative food that travelers always select to try. It will satisfy you when you travel in Qinghai Lake area.
