Datong Ancient Architecture

Datong as northern China's famous city for its history and culture has variety of ancient architecture heritage made in different dynasties. Apart from Yungang Grottoes, dug in North Wei Dynasty, there are also a great many fabulous ancient architecture built in Liao, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. Moreover, their features and techniques in building structure and architectural styles are both rarely seen in China.

Represented ancient architecture of Liao Dynasty include: Bojiajiaocang Hall of Huayan Temple, Daxiongbaodian Hall of Shanhua Temple, Puxian Pavilion and Brick Pagoda of Chanfang Temple. Typical ancient architecture of Jin Dynasty include: Sansheng Hall, Daxiongbaodian Hall of Dayun Temple and Brick Pagoda of Yuanjue Temple. Outstanding ancient architecture of Yuan Dynasty consists of Grand Hall of Lord Guan Temple, Pagoda of Fahua Temple and Grand Hall of Yongan Temple. Excellent ancient architecture of Ming Dynasty include: Nine-Dragon Wall, Five-Dragon Wall, Three-Dragon Wall, Confucius Temple, Drum Tower, Xingguo Temple, Wild Goose Pagoda, Yunlin Temple and Ancient Architectural Complex of Ciyun Temple. Ancient Architecture of Qing Dynasty is superior in quantity, and the representatives are Kwan-yin Hall, Hengshan Mountain Architectural Complex and Water God Hall of Hushan Mountain.

According to its different use, the ancient architecture can be classified into Ancient Temple Buildings, Ancient Pagoda Buildings and Ancient Pavilions.
Ancient Temple Buildings: Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, Xuankong Temple, Jiaoshan Temple, Chanfang Temple, Guandi Temple, Confucius Temple, Qingzhen Grand Mosque, Xingguo Temple, Zhaoyang Temple, Yongan Temple, Water God Hall, Yunlin Temple, Ciyun Temple and Jueshan Temple.
Ancient Pagoda Buildings: Brick Pagoda of Chanfang Temple, Wild Goose Pagoda, Pagoda of Jiaoshan Temple, Pagoda of Fahua Temple and Pagoda of Yuanjue Temple.
Ancient Pavilions: Datong Drum Tower and Puxian Pavilion.
