Located at Xuetianwan, Renmin Road, Chongqing, People's Grand Hall is the largest theater of Chongqing city. In 1950, it was initially built and completed in 1953. Originally, it was named Sino-Soviet Union Tower and later changed to Great Hall of Southwest Administration Committee, and in 1955, it was finalized to be People's Grand Hall.
The grand hall covers 66,000 square meters with 2.5 square meters of architectural area. The grand hall is comprised of main hall, south tower and north tower. The main hall covers 18,500 square meters. The grand hall is 65 meters high. The inside of the main hall has a large-scale stage, the surroundings are five-floor audiences seats, in total, there are 4,200 seats. The grand hall is built in the Sino-west architectural style. The main part is built following the structure of Qinian Hall of Temple of Heaven as well as Tiananmen. The south and north subsidiary buildings are featured by the western architectural styles. All of them are all covered with the green glazed tiles. The main gate is a grand Paifang-style building. The whole building complex is harmonious and magnificent. Over there, a lot of international large performance groups show their greatness like those who are from Former Soviet Union, Japan, North Korea, India, Romania and Jugoslavia. It is an important place for Sino-foreign cultural exchange in Chongqing. People’s Granf Hall experienced a lot of great historical events which witnessed the development Chongqing had and the frustration Chongqing suffered.
People’s Grand Hall was largely reconstructed in August, 2006 and 10 months later, the reconstruction was completed at the total cost of 51 million RMB. It is also the largest restoration since 1952. Thanks to this large-scale updating and extension, People’s Grand Hall of Chongqing re-exhibits its enchantment and solemnity in the public. To a most degree, it has been the symbolic building of Chongqing Municipality.
